Manchester Congress 2003.

By Boris Ewart

Championship Pairs

1st Bernard & Rhona Goldenfield.

This came up in the qualifying round. David Audley was wise to remove the double:

3S was 1 down after N was repeatedly forced so could not enjoy the long D trick. In 3C-X W has 4C tricks, 3H tricks and 1D trick. However careful play will park the S10 on the 3rd  H winner and the the play of the

S6 from E will enable the C3 to be made en-passant for the 9th trick.

Board 24 was a missed opportunity:

E(Jim Luck) was worried about a D lead if W did not have the CA or the HQ. I think I should have bid 5H instead of 4H - clearly asking for a D control then E can bid the slam.

Adrian Kenworthy got away with this one in the final:

He bid 2D to ‘inhibit the D lead’ and reasoned that 4NT was based on a D fit so bid 6S. N of course raised to 7S.

Championship Teams

1st Michelle Brunner, ‘Pablo’ Cassells, John Hassett and Bill Hirst.

This came up in the qualifying round and is an example of a pseudo suicide double-squeeze:

N led the H7 to H2, H10 and HA. The only winning line is to duck a C, win H return  with HK then D to DQ and DK. If S returns D9 win D10 and S to SJ and SK. You can now cash 9 tricks as C are 3-3. If S returns a C win CK and S to SJ and SK. Later you finesse S for DJ.

At the table I won HA and played  S3 to S5, SJ and SK. H3 was ducked to H8 and HQ came back to HK – S discarded C7 as he felt he was guarding the S suit. I tried D to DQ and DK. Back came D9 to D10. I cashed DA and N discarded C8 as he also thought he was guarding the S suit. I let N have the H9 to HJ just in case S had 4 C so I could squeeze him in C & D when the S were cashed. The 9th trick was the C4.

Aggressive bidding led to this lucky game in the final:

Because of the favourable H position and S having no entry, this has a cold 9 tricks.

The next board is a discovery play:
